Pehuen is the hardiest of the conifer species to be found in Araucania. It is considered the national tree of Chile, and it is native to the central-south region. Generally it reaches a height of 30m, and produces edible fruit very rich in protein and carbohydrates. Pehuen grows well on rocky and sandy ground and is resistant to fire. These trees have survived geological cataclysms that effected the Andes in the tertiary period.
